To be honest, I had never even heard of Avoriaz before this trip. Probably because it\u2019s mostly known as a ski resort in the winter and a mountain biking hotspot in the summer \u2013 neither of which are really my thing. So, discovering this region with completely fresh eyes made it even more exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t have many expectations going in, but as soon as I arrived, I was impressed. Avoriaz sits up at 1800 meters, is completely car-free, and has a really unique charm. I instantly felt like this trip was going to be a good one.<\/p>\n\n\n

My hotel, Mil8<\/a> was just what I was hoping for \u2013 stylish, cozy, and best of all: they let me bring my road bike into the room. Love that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since I got in later than planned, I just went for a short walk around town that evening, then headed back to my room, grabbed my book, and had a chilled, quiet night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day brought that classic mountain weather \u2013 grey, cold, and foggy. But honestly? I enjoyed it. I spent some time on my laptop, made full use of the infinity pool and sauna, and even went bouldering nearby. The best part of the day? A fantastic massage that left me completely relaxed. I ended the evening the same way I started it \u2013 reading, cozy, and totally at peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the next morning: sunshine! I couldn\u2019t wait to get on my bike. After a big breakfast, I headed out. There\u2019s only one road down from Avoriaz \u2013 the Col de la Joux Verte \u2013 and even though it was still a bit chilly, it was absolutely beautiful. I grabbed a quick coffee at the bottom, then started exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First climb: Col de la Joux Plane \u2013 10 kilometers, 750 meters of elevation, barely any traffic, smooth roads, and amazing scenery. Exactly what I love. A short breather at the top, then straight on to Col de l\u2019Encrenaz. As soon as I turned off toward the climb, it got wonderfully quiet \u2013 no cars, just me, the road, and stunning views. After riding back through Morzine, I took on the Joux Verte climb again \u2013 12 kilometers and nearly 800 meters of climbing. Then: food, sauna, book, bed. Pure happiness. The next day, I went out for another ride. Once again down the Joux Verte and onto a more trafficked main road. Luckily, the drivers were super respectful \u2013 no close calls, which made the ride surprisingly relaxed. I was still glad when my GPS told me to turn off onto a quieter road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first climb of the day was Col du Grand Taillet \u2013 calm, scenic, and a nice steady gradient. Exactly how I like it. After a quick snack and a water refill, I was ready for the next pass. But then \u2013 surprise: it was closed due to construction. I started thinking about how long the detour would be, but then one of the workers made a call and gave me the go-ahead to pass through \u2013 as long as I walked my bike near the crew. So kind! They even made room for me as I passed. Seriously saved my day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not long after, I reached the next big highlight: Col du Corbier. Brand-new asphalt and not a single car in sight. It felt like I had the whole mountain to myself. It was super windy at the top, so I took a quick photo and kept moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heading toward Montriond, the wind picked up a bit, but I pushed through \u2013 because I really wanted to climb the Joux Verte from the other side this time. And wow \u2013 what a great decision. 13 kilometers, just over 800 meters of elevation, and it passes a beautiful lake. With every turn, the view just kept getting better. That side is even quieter and maybe even a bit more scenic. I was so glad I didn\u2019t skip it. Back at the hotel: fuel up, sauna, bed. Another perfect day. Strava: More Cols<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For my last day, I decided to explore the area on foot. Starting at 1800 meters, the views are already incredible \u2013 and the fun part? You\u2019re constantly crossing between France and Switzerland, which you can tell by the hiking signs suddenly switching languages. The hike was beautiful, right up until the final stretch. I accidentally took the steepest, most direct way back to Avoriaz \u2013 definitely should\u2019ve followed the switchbacks instead. But hey, lesson learned. At least the pool and sauna were waiting for me afterward \u2013 and I even squeezed in a round of mini golf before finishing the day with some raclette. Perfect ending. My time in Avoriaz flew by way too fast. There\u2019s still so much I want to do \u2013 like checking out the golf course I didn\u2019t get to. The only thing I really missed? A proper good coffee. But honestly, I\u2019d go back in a heartbeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you\u2019re into cycling: Hotel Mil8 is a dream. Bike-friendly, super comfortable, and in the perfect location. Can\u2019t wait to come back.<\/p>\n\n\n
